Chimney flashing in Rīga

The joint where a chimney comes through the roof is the leak we see most. The roof moves a little with heat, frost and wind, the chimney doesn’t, and that joint takes all the rain running down the slope above it.

Skursteņa apdare means finishing that joint, and sometimes the whole chimney, in sheet metal, so water runs around the chimney and not into the house.

What usually goes wrong

Signs to look for inside and from the ground.

  • A wet patch by the chimney

Damp on the ceiling or the chimney breast, or a wet chimney wall in the attic. Worst in heavy rain.

  • Cracked cement collar

On many older houses the “flashing” is just a band of cement around the chimney. It cracks as the house moves and lets water straight in.

  • Loose or rusty flashing

Metal that has lifted, rusted or pulled away from the bricks, often with old sealant peeling off it.

  • Crumbling bricks above the roof

Frost breaks up wet bricks and mortar. The chimney soaks up rain and lets it out inside the house.

What we do about it

Folded metal, not a tube of sealant.

  1. Look and price

Send photos of the chimney from outside and the wet patch inside, or book the free inspection.

  2. Old flashing off

Old metal, cracked cement and old sealant removed, down to sound brick.

  3. New flashing folded on site

Sheet metal cut and folded around the chimney: an apron at the front, side pieces, and a small saddle at the back that sends water around the chimney.

  4. Sealed into the brick

The top edge goes into the mortar joint and is sealed, so water can’t run down behind the metal.

  5. Cladding, if the bricks are bad

If the brickwork above the roof is crumbling, the chimney can be clad in sheet metal with a cap on top.

  6. Guarantee

We clear up and give you a written three-year guarantee.

Questions about chimneys

Isn’t sealant enough?

For a night, maybe. Sealant on its own cracks after a season or two of sun and frost. Folded metal flashing is what lasts.

Why is the price per metre?

Because the work follows the outline of the chimney. Add up the four sides of your chimney where it meets the roof and multiply by the price per metre: that is your starting point. Flashing costs from €12/m.

Can it be done in winter?

Yes. Chimney leaks are fixed year-round, with materials that seal below zero.

We don’t use the chimney any more. Does it still need flashing?

Yes. The rain doesn’t know the stove is gone. An unused chimney needs a dry joint at the roof and a cap on top, or the bricks soak up water and crumble.
