Roof leak repair in Rīga
Water coming through the ceiling is stressful, especially at night. The good news: most leaks are one small fault in one place. A flashing, a seam, a few screws, a blocked gutter. It can be fixed, and usually without a new roof.
Below is what to do before we get there, how to tell where the water is coming from, and what the repair costs.
Before the roofer arrives
Do these in order. None of them needs a ladder.
Stay off the roof
A wet roof is slippery, in the dark even more so, and wind makes it worse. Don’t climb up and don’t lean a ladder on the gutter tonight. A fall costs far more than any leak.
Make the electrics safe
If water is near a ceiling light, a socket or a switch, turn that circuit off at the fuse box. Don’t touch wet fittings. If you’re not sure which circuit it is, turn off the main switch and use a torch.
Catch the water
Put a bucket under the drip with a cloth in the bottom so it doesn’t splash. Lay towels around it. Move furniture, rugs and anything electrical out of the way.
Watch the ceiling
If the ceiling bulges, keep people and pets out of the room: wet plasterboard can come down in one piece. If the ceiling is cracking or sagging over a wide area, leave the room and close the door.
Look in the attic, if it’s safe
With a torch, find where the water comes in and put a bucket or a tray under it. Stand only on the beams, never between them.
Take photos
Photograph the wet patch, the attic and, from the ground, the roof above it. Send them to us on WhatsApp. They help us bring the right materials, and your insurer may ask for them too.
In a block of flats?
The roof belongs to all the owners. Tell your building manager or the apartment owners’ association as well. We work for associations too, so they can call us directly.
Where is the water coming from?
Water runs along rafters and boards before it drips, so the wet patch is rarely right under the hole. When it leaks tells you a lot.
Only in heavy rain
A patch near the chimney, a roof window or where two slopes meet. The flashing or the valley has a gap that only overflows when there’s a lot of water.
Only when it’s windy
Rain blown sideways gets under the ridge, under lifted sheets or round the edges of the roof. On a calm rainy day it stays dry.
Small drips all over a metal roof
The rubber washers under the screws have dried out and cracked. Each screw lets in a little. Typical on older profiled sheet roofs.
After snow, on a dry day
Melting snow freezes again at the cold edge of the roof and the meltwater backs up under the covering. This is an ice dam. If it happens every winter, warm air from the house is heating the roof, and that is worth fixing too.
Damp at the top of a wall
Usually the gutter: blocked, sagging or leaking at a joint, so the water runs down the wall instead of the downpipe.
Drips in frost, with no rain
This may not be a leak at all. Warm, damp air from the house meets the cold underside of a metal roof, turns to water and drips. The fix is ventilation, not sealant, and we’ll tell you if that’s what it is.

Can you come tonight?
Call us. Leaks have a 24-hour call-out and emergencies are made safe the same day. If it is dark and the roof is steep and wet, we’ll talk you through keeping things dry until it is safe to go up.
Why is the drip nowhere near the hole?
Water gets in at one spot, then runs along a rafter, a board or the vapour barrier until it finds a place to drop. A metre or two away is normal. That’s why we look from the attic and from the roof.
Will my home insurance pay?
That depends on your policy. Many cover sudden damage, like a storm, but not wear. Take photos before you clean up, and keep our written defect report and the invoice. Insurers usually ask for both.
How much does it cost to fix a leak?
Finding and sealing a leak costs from €150. Most jobs get a price the same day from photos, and the price is written down before we start.
