Wooden shingle roof repair

Lubiņi, thin wooden shingles, are the traditional roof of Latvian farmhouses, summer houses and old churches. You still see them in Jūrmala, on manor houses, and on new houses built in the old style. Šindeļi are the thicker kind.

A wooden roof that is looked after lasts for decades. Repairing one means keeping it dry and replacing what has rotted, piece by piece, in matching timber.

What usually goes wrong

Wood is fine with rain. It is wood that stays wet that rots.

  • Moss and dark, soft patches

Moss keeps the wood wet, and wet wood rots. Usually on the north side and under trees.

  • Split or missing shingles

Wood cracks as it dries and swells, and storms pull out loose pieces. One gap lets water onto the boards underneath.

  • Curled ends

Old shingles curl up at the ends and stop overlapping properly.

  • Ridge and valleys

These places dry out last and rot first.

What we do about it

Like for like, so the roof still looks like itself.

  1. Look first

Photos are a start. The free inspection tells us how much of the roof is still sound.

  2. Clear the moss

Moss and debris cleared gently. A pressure washer tears up the surface of the wood, so it isn’t the tool for this.

  3. Replace what’s gone

Damaged sections replaced in matching timber.

  4. Treat and seal

The repaired area and the roof around it treated and sealed against moss and rot.

  5. Guarantee

We clear up and give you a written three-year guarantee.

Questions about wooden roofs

Will the repair stand out?

For a while. New wood is lighter than old, grey shingles. It weathers and darkens over the next seasons until it is hard to tell apart.

Can a wooden roof be protected against moss and rot?

Yes. After cleaning, the wood is treated and sealed. Cutting back branches that shade the roof helps a lot too, because the wood dries faster in the sun.

My house is a protected building. Does that matter?

It can. On a protected building a like-for-like repair in wood is usually what the rules expect anyway. Changing to another material usually needs approval first. More about this on our Jūrmala page.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the size of the damage and the timber, so we price wooden roofs from photos or after the free inspection. The price is written into the agreement.

Send a photo, get a price

One photo of the roof from the ground and one of the wet patch inside are usually enough for a first price the same day.

Mon–Sat 8:00–20:00. Leaks and storm damage seven days a week.
